Database Development and Administration
" Just be sure you do something you really enjoy."
As a database programmer (...detailed
description) at a private university, I am
responsible for designing reports and processes that
help our department do their work more efficiently. In
a typical workday, I spend about half of my time at my
desk writing computer programs, and the other half solving
problems with the system and training financial aid staff
on new procedures.
I really enjoy programming and working directly with the people that use the system. I work independently not only with the financial aid computer system, but also with a great supportive group of programmers who help each other out. I'm also equally fortunate that I have some flexibility with my work hours and telecommuting.

Experience is very important, but education (...more
on education) gives you the basic skills needed for all technical
positions. I have a BA and MS in computer science, and
although a four-year degree is preferable, you need at
least a two-year degree. My career
path includes a variety of technology-related positions (...more
on career ins & outs). I started as a software engineer, doing telecommunications programming. I've also been a
business application programmer, a technical writer, and
a web developer. Each job required
some specific training, by attending workshops and
seminars offered at work, reading manuals, and taking free
on-line courses.
There are many options available in the IT world. You could be a programmer,
a network engineer, a graphic designer, or a computer salesperson.
There is also a need for junior high and high school technology
teachers. Think about
the type of person you are. If you think you would enjoy
working in an office, then you may want to be a programmer.
If you have a creative
side but also enjoy programming, then possibly a graphic
artist would be a good fit. If you don't want to be tied
to a desk all day and you
enjoy interacting with many different people, maybe a job
in computer sales is for you. |
