Network Design and Administration
"The novelty of being a woman techie always seemed like a plus."
I have a very interesting job as network design administrator
for our corporate-wide email and web access system (...detailed
description). We are a multi-national company so we rely
on our communications technology very heavily. For example
I am responsible for an internet service called a listserv
that our U.S. division uses frequently to talk with divisions
in other countries. I spend a large part of my day talking
to co-workers by phone, email, and instant messenger.

I've always been interested in solving logic puzzles, so, when
I started college, I knew that computer science was a good
fit (...more
on education).
I ended up earning a BA and MA in computer science and then
started working part-time while my daughter was young. One
thing that people always ask about is what the future looks
like for IT. While sending jobs outside of the company (outsourcing),
and often outside of the country, are putting pressure on
the field, I think that if you combine IT with something
like health (biotechnology), you really open many more doors
(...more
on career ins & outs). I
also suggest that you look toward developing other skills
like
leadership and management to help your career advance and
make yourself more marketable to an employer. |
