We worked with the trades to organize an expo and develop an informational booklet. The booklet contains general information on each of the participating trades. At the expo each student received a bump hat, safety glasses, and a packet of information, which they could keep after the expo. Students were also given safety instructions and an overview of the day by the Director of Safety Education with the Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program. Students then were divided into groups and rotated through the booths where the construction trades shared information about their apprenticeship program and provided “hands-on” opportunities related to their trade. Some of the activities the students participated in included: laying bricks, using a tig welder to make a short bead, tying rebar, operating a crane simulator, and competing in a nail driving contest.
