In order to increase math achievement levels, we enrolled 44 students identified as academically disadvantaged, including economically disadvantaged and students with disabilities, in math in the ALEKS online system for assessment and individualized teaching of mathematics.

Parents will discuss career information with their children inside and outside of the home, making it a part of their regular discourse. The results should be equally beneficial in turns of guidance counselor impact.

This project consisted of two career planning dinners/informational meetings for parents and guidance counselors of high school sophomore students.  At the beginning of each evening, a candle light dinner was served, followed by “Tech Savvy,” a DVD about technology changes in local industry.  In this video, some of the presenters are people employed in nontraditional careers.  Information was then shared on the following topics:  the Career Planning Process, workforce trends, and highlights of Vermilion County, Project Lead the Way classes and activities, local and national manufacturing opportunities, College Express (vocational classes for high school students), and dual enrollment.

Discovering Your Career

To inspire students who are undecided about their futures to decide on a major or to at least make the decision to attend college.

The participating students were administered the DISCOVER interest inventories which includes career-oriented questions.  Upon completion of paper copies of the inventories, the Director of Career Advisement created each student a user account and entered the inventory responses in the online program.  There were 148 students who participated including sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school.  The following week, each class visited Frontier’s campus for the “Discovering Your Career” program.  The students were shown how to access their individual DISCOVER user accounts and had their inventory results explained.  The students were also provided with a folder including information about Frontier and college in general, received a tour of campus, and the opportunity to attend a few presentations given by Frontier instructors.  At the presentations, students received information specific to Frontier offered programs and services.  The students were also provided with refreshments during their visit.

To involve 8th grade students with disabilities in a five county area to a program that gives students information on employment/training opportunities, postsecondary education, and the necessary high school courses that lead to those opportunities.

OCC partnered with SESE and DRS to provide a 2 hour on-site program for eighth graders with disabilities at 12 schools within Clay, Richland, Lawrence, Crawford and Jasper counties.  This partnership developed an interactive presentation to expose eighth graders to career choices.  Students completed a career interest inventory to determine their career area of interest.  Students received information on what careers and employment opportunities are available for those career clusters.  In addition, students were given information on what education and training is necessary to obtain those jobs.  Finally, information on developing a career pathway was presented.   Students played interactive games designed to expose them to this subject matter.

The New Look Project helped send three future radiologic technologists to a state wide conference.  This conference allowed the three students to obtain valuable information that will help them in their future endeavors in the rad. tech field.  We partnered with the Kaskaskia College Radiologic Technology Club at Kaskaskia College to help offset the costs of the trip for the three qualified students.

Increase student awareness of employment opportunities in the construction industry.

We worked with the trades to organize an expo and develop an informational booklet.  The booklet contains general information on each of the participating trades.  At the expo each student received a bump hat, safety glasses, and a packet of information, which they could keep after the expo.  Students were also given safety instructions and an overview of the day by the Director of Safety Education with the Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program.  Students then were divided into groups and rotated through the booths where the construction trades shared information about their apprenticeship program and provided “hands-on” opportunities related to their trade.  Some of the activities the students participated in included:  laying bricks, using a tig welder to make a short bead, tying rebar, operating a crane simulator, and competing in a nail driving contest.

5th Annual Men in Nursing Day

A large number of the special populations students had only been to fast food restaurants so attending a luncheon at a very nice conference center was a new experience in itself.  Students were mixed with students from other schools so they had to make conversation with people they didn’t know.  These students have acquired skills they will carry with them for a lifetime.

A motivational speaker spoke about the future for students graduating high school and the choices the students will have to make about their own future.  Each session was conducted for approximately 20 – 25 minutes in length on topics of interviewing skills, dress for success, resume and portfolios, and nontraditional careers with labor market statistics for the local economy.

WIN Curriculum software lease was purchased in conjunction with local school funds and regional Career and Technical Education System funds.  A true partnership was formed in combining these resources to allow students to receive the benefits of this learning tool. Three school districts were involved in the pilot project.

To expose non-English and limited English speaking Hispanic/Latino families to higher education opportunities and to help them set higher aspirations and educational goals.

Final Report Summary (pdf)
The FUSE program started with mothers and daughters.  We focused on overcoming personal and social barriers on gender biases, increasing self-esteem, improving communication and exploring higher education options.  The last two sessions included the entire family.

A ninety percent increase in knowledge of nontraditional careers was reported for Girl Scout Day and an increase of sixty-one percent in knowledge of nontraditional careers from pre to post test was reported.
